LO5/S Volunteering at K-9 Angels Animal Shelter
When I started thinking about my NHS project, I realized wanted to volunteer at an animal shelter called K-9 Angels as I am a huge fan of dogs considering I have grown up with them my entire life. So, I decided to apply to become certified to volunteer there. I went online and submitted my application and waited eagerly for a response. As I got the okay, I scheduled the training session so that I could learn how to help out at the animal shelter. When the day arrived, I walked into the shelter, I signed in, and then I was greeted with a bunch more people that were here for the same orientation as I was. I thought for a minute about how I have a difficult time meeting and working with new people as I felt I worked better by myself. Although, I had to get over this challenge of mine right at that very moment. As everyone slowly arrived, the instructor-led us around the shelter explaining to us what everything was. For example, where the dog food is, where you walk the dogs, how to fill up their water bowls, how to log when you take the dogs out, and so much more. Once we finished the orientation, the instructor told us to get a leash and a doggy bag so we could start volunteering. I was a little nervous as I didn't know what I was doing, however the people at the orientation were there to help me. We all worked collaboratively together to figure out how we were going to do everything. Some of us helped out with walking the dogs while the others went to go watch over the baby dogs. The benefits of working all together as a team greatly weighed out the idea of trying to do these tasks on my own. People were getting more done as a team by helping each other out with small chores, explaining how to do something more effectively, and so much more. I initially had struggled with working alongside someone right after I met them, but this was not the case at the friendly neighborhood animal shelter. Everyone helped each other and worked together so that we could all be successful with our first time volunteering at the amazing K-9 Angels.
