LO6/S Helping to Feed the Homeless

At my Sunday School, we went to go do community service at a place called the Beacon. The Beacon is a shelter for the homeless where they can get fresh food, clean clothes, a shower, legal help, and so much more. This organization has been helping the homeless for many years and they have been doing a great job. With all of this being said, my Sunday School group got in a car, headed to the Beacon, and met up with the person that was going to be leading us. The person explained that we had the choice of doing laundry or helping to make food. I wanted to help make food as I am passionate about how everyone should get food. We then split up to either go to the laundry room or the kitchen. I walked with my group to the kitchen to start help making food to serve. When we got into the kitchen, we met the chef and then immediately got to work. We helped to prepare food and also got in the line to serve some already made food. The homeless people started to line up and we served ...

LO7/S Harvesting Plants and Prepping Soil

At my Sunday school, our group was notified that we were going to a community garden to help harvest plants and prepare the soil. With this being said, we all got in our cars and went to the garden. As everyone started to arrive, we met with the person that owned the garden. He was a very nice person that explained that we would be harvesting carrots, onions, and turnips from his garden. We would then also prep the soil for the next batch of veggies to be planted. My Sunday school group split into two groups, one was going to harvest the vegetables while the other group was going to prepare the soil. I decided to go with the group that was harvesting vegetables because this was apparently one of the more difficult tasks to do. The vegetable picking group ended up picking all of the ripe carrots, onions, and turnips from the garden. We then went to go prep the soil with the soil prepping group.     As one can see, the ethics of my choices include want...

LO2/C Packaging Food at the Houston Food Bank

A while back, my family planned to go volunteer at the Houston Food Bank. We decided we would go on the weekend so that it wouldn't interfere with our work week. So, once the weekend came along, we all got in the car and headed over to the Food Bank. Once we got there, we met with our group and the person that was going to be instructing us through this experience. Our leader then started telling us that we were going to be packing food in boxes for the community. With this being said, we were led to the back to start packing the boxes. The first thing we did was grab flat pieces of cardboard and make them into boxes. This was a challenging process because we had to fold and crease each piece of cardboard in order to make one box. Once some of the boxes were formed, we put them on a conveyor type belt. We would then pass the boxes down for people to put food in. The food we used was canned food, granola bars, and other non-perishables that would not go bad aft...
