LO2/C Packaging Food at the Houston Food Bank

A while back, my family planned to go volunteer at the Houston Food Bank. We decided we would go on the weekend so that it wouldn't interfere with our work week. So, once the weekend came along, we all got in the car and headed over to the Food Bank. Once we got there, we met with our group and the person that was going to be instructing us through this experience. Our leader then started telling us that we were going to be packing food in boxes for the community. With this being said, we were led to the back to start packing the boxes. The first thing we did was grab flat pieces of cardboard and make them into boxes. This was a challenging process because we had to fold and crease each piece of cardboard in order to make one box. Once some of the boxes were formed, we put them on a conveyor type belt. We would then pass the boxes down for people to put food in. The food we used was canned food, granola bars, and other non-perishables that would not go bad after a couple days. Once we put the food in the box, I helped to put tape on them so they were sealed in. The taping part was a little difficult, but I became better at it. My family did this all day, working from the morning until the afternoon.

As one can see, the challenges that I undertook were making the boxes and taping them together. I had difficulties with figuring out how to put the boxes together as I would constantly crease them wrong. With the tape, I ended up continuously getting it tangled. I also had difficulty with working for many hours, as I was extremely tired. In this process though, I gained a lot of new helpful skills. I became skillful with a tape roller and became proficient with putting boxes together.
